P3: Chapter One

Edwin P. Uts
The loss of Ragnar was like no pain Eddie had ever felt, it was a gaping wound, deep inside his psyche, a part of him that had been torn away. Around him, the walls, covered in tapestry, moved. Miniature principles moved, displaying their basic move set, on the walls that surrounded him. He looked without seeing, his eyes welled up and he was unable to see anything. Soon the surface tension broke and the tears fell.
His sorrow consumed him, soon the distinction between him and his sorrow fell away. For an unknown time, he sat on the cold marble floor and sobbed.
This grew old, fast, and he began to pick himself up, Pushing himself to his feet he looked down and saw his reflection in the marble floor. It was the first time in he didn’t know how long that when he looked Ragnar wasn’t looking back. The face that looked up from the floor was full of sadness, it’s eye's red-rimmed, and runny.
The flame of rage burst to life inside him. The face he saw in the floor, his face, filled him with rage. True Ragnar was gone, and though the face crying in the floor was pathetic, it also represented the only face that would seek out revenge for Ragnar.
The thought was like a lightning rod, revenge for Ragnar. Revenge for Ragnar! So it was with this thought running through his core like pure energy, that Eddie looked to the tapestries, to the myriad of principles that ran around on them. He initially looked to the melee principles, but the pain from his recent loss kept him from focusing on any of the principles on that tapestry.
He looked at the other tapestries, then closed his eyes, he needed a plan. He knew what he wanted, revenge. Ninjas were legendary assassins, in almost every piece of media that he could think of they were always setting out of quests for revenge. With that he had a plan, build the meanest revenge ninja principle he could.
He opened his eyes and in a few moments, he had selected the ninja principle template. This choice made, Eddie was now confronted with the next; what race? His first thought was to just go with the default, which was human. But he stopped at thought of how boring a generic ninja was. He had no good idea of how long he would be this principle, he certainly didn’t want to be stuck in a generic principle.
A ninja was right he felt as he shifted through the tapestry with all the races. He started looking, limiting his choice to races which would work well with his choice of class. With this in mind, he looked at elves and fae. Fae held his interest, their extreme agility and the possibility of adding magic to his tool box. The Half-man caught his imagination.and when he found the snake man his mind was made up.

Snakemen-Born into the world with eighty brothers and sisters, fighting for everything becomes a way of life. Scales harden with maturity. Providing a basic suit of armor, as well as a passive armor bonus.

When he saw that he knew he had made up his mind, he didn't need to look further. Once he had selected the principle, he was confronted with a few more decisions. Most of these choices were purely cosmetic, he chooses to use the ‘western diamondback rattler’ as his model, liking its diamond shaped head and spiked eyebrows. The next question; Legs, to have them or not, would have gameplay consequence. Having had legs his whole life he chooses the tail option, He clothed the torso in a black kimono. Almost done Eddie moved quickly through the next few steps of arming and clothing this new principle.
He armed his scaled ninja with throwing knives, pleased at their effectiveness at both close and ranged attacks. With theses choices made, he was once again faced with the task of coming up with a name. Again he needed to pause and take a deep breath. His first choice was Revenge, which he knew it was a little passe. Also, it turned out that name wasn’t available if he wanted he could use Revenge10424, he didn’t.
Feeling a little daunted by his task, Eddie gave the image of the principle a spin, then accessed the weapon menu and began moving through blades, settling on thin throwing knives. He also noted that dressed all in black and with a cowl, there was very little worth noting, in fact, it was a little boring. Initially, he didn’t think this was a problem, choosing to rely on his name to stand out. Though of course, this made picking the right name much more important.
As he had done so long ago, he did again, he took to the internet for some ideas. He started with a search for “human torso with snake body,” This turned up little, only that this race was called the naga. While searching, bouncing from one site to another he came across a list of famous hybrid creatures in mythology. He was almost ready to close the site when his eye was caught by the Medusa, there was something there and after playing a little, he had M3Dussa.
Not quite ready to be done tweaking his new principle, Eddie returned to the outfit page and started by removing the excess cloth covering G01ph4uck’s head. Eddie also adjusted the color of G01ph4uck’s fur, highlighting the oranges and reds, Eddie liked the effect, thinking that it kind of looked like a flaming fox so he minimized the clothing, and enhanced the fur that created the flame illusion. Eddie, content, and ready to enter AntruA with this build, flipped through the menus quickly, finding the Go On button and pressing it.
The principle, using his knives, was quickly through the tapestry and M3Dussa was watching Eddie’s still body down on the floor, three blades in his chest. When Eddie twitched then began to rise, Coil, who based on past experience was expecting this, put the Zombie Eddie down with a blade thrust into Zombie Eddie’s forehead.
Again drawing on his past experience, M3Dussa turned and entered the tunnel behind the tapestry as soon as his knife was free. He paused a moment upon entering the open green space and read the sign.
Everyone for Themselves Battle
Level One Only
A part of him wanted to go in and try and kill everyone, another part just wanted to run. He took a deep breath then slowly let it out, now all that remained inside him was the rage, he held onto it and looked at the next sign.
AntruA
Nearest town
Upon reading that M3Dussa immediately started down that path and soon found himself in the familiar setting of the Bank. This branch looked the same as every other he had ever been in, the door, open to his left and a desk to his right. Behind the desk AsLionsMain stood, leading G01ph4uck to the assumption that he had spawned in Norca, a peak out the door confirmed.
“Hello? Hi, welcome.” AsLionsMain said, breaking the silence.
“Uh oh. Hi, thanks.” M3Dussa replied when he realized that he was being addressed.
“Welcome to AntruA!” AsLionsMain exclaimed, “Is this your first time here, or are you…uh, returning?”
“Um, I’m returning.”
“I’m truly sorry. But I have good some good news,” AsLionsMain shrugged, “you still have your accounts and It’s surprisingly easy to find them as well as connect them to your new principle. Would you like help in getting that set up?”
“I actually work for the Bank, too, so if you could just pass me one of the menus, I should be able to take care of it. Thank you.”
“Sure, there are some things you should know, I mean I don’t know when you got Tokened, er, but a lot has happened, I mean you may already know.”
“I think I know some, but I would really like to hear what is being said. So please, start at the beginning.”
“You knew of, or were probably a part, of Red Army and the Band of the Golden Hand?”
“Knew of,” M3Dussa mumbled under his breath.
“I don’t know any of the details, but something happened and the leadership of both clans imploded, what came out, like some diseased butterfly was a single clan, they’re calling it the Band of the Black Hand. they’re extorting new principles.”
“Wait a minute. What do you mean extorting principles?”
“Of course they’re not calling it that, no they’re calling it protection.”
“Protection from what?”
“Getting Tokened.”
“And principles are doing it?”
“Some not all.”
“Those who are not, what are they doing?”
“Some are joining together. Many are not leveling up so the threat is an insignificant one.”
“What!? Are they just not fighting?”
“If they do fight they leave their Token some place safe.”
“That’s so sad.”
“It really is. “
“Well, thanks for the heads up.” M3Dussa placed the brochure on the desk then turned to leave.
“Wait,” AsLionsMain called out. M3Dussa turned back with a questioning look. “Sorry, it seemed that you were thinking about not paying the Black Hand? If that’s true I can tell you of a few groups who could help you? I could tell you about them if you would like?”
M3Dussa walked back to the desk, “ sure that would be great.”
“Do you remember the Blue Army?”
“They were in a war with the Red Army, right?”
“Yeah, and they were joined by the Green Army, both seem pretty dead set against the Black Hand. I think both would offer some form of protection, you would most likely need to join the army to get any protection I don’t know how you feel about that. Another place I heard principles are going to get away from the threat of the Black Hand, is the city of Sourka, in the south. Though I don’t know how much protection you’ll get there I here the place is like the wild west, anything goes. I have also heard tales of a city called Ral’ya or something like that. I have met a handful, maybe eight, principles who said they were heading there for protection. I’ve heard there is a clan or army there that controls everything in the city, they really despise Tokening so they should protect you, I have no idea of what that might cost thou.”
“That’s it? That represents the sum total of the resistance?”
“That’s what I ‘ve heard You have to remember this just happened, I’m still trying to understand what it all means. I’m sure there are other principles who are fighting back, I just haven’t heard of them yet.”
“Sure, that makes sense. I’m going to head out there, see what’s what. Thank you very much for all the information, this way I’m not walking out there blind.”
“One last thing before you head out.”
“Yeah?”
“Make sure you’re ready, they are going to come at you are soon walk out of here.”
“Who?”
“The Black Hand, they always have a principle or two watching that door, waiting for noobs like you.”
“Thanks for the heads up, maybe I’ll see you around.”
“Maybe,” AsLionsMain shrugged then looked up, “good luck out there.
M3Dussa smiled and waved, turned and exited the bank. A step out the door and he needed to stop and take in the moment, the blue sky and the bright sun, the fresh breeze playing upon his scales. It was beautiful. The city alive as always, under a sky that was placid unaffected by the goings on under it. M3Dussa took a deep breath, exhaling slowly and with a contented grin spreading, he slithered off the deck onto the road, then turned and faced the south.
He had barely begun to ambulate when a voice stopped him. “Hey! Hello, hi there!” It wasn’t the words that stopped him, it was something deeper, some quality in the voice that seemed to wrest control from his mind stopping him in mid-slither. The principle approaching was a silver fox, dressed in black and gray. “Hello friend! Welcome!”
“Hi,” M3Dussa started south again.
“Oh come now. Please wait, I promise I won't take much of your time.”
Again M3Dussa felt compelled to stop and turn to face the fox. He used the opportunity to focus it.

“Hey, thanks for stopping, I’ll be quick, is this your first time in AntruA or were you Tokened? Look I’m sorry to be blunt, but it really helps out to know what your experience is. I’m here to great new principles and offer any help I can.”
“Wow, that is so nice of you. But I think I’m good.” M3Dussa started moving again.
$1lvert0ngdF0x started walking, keeping pace. “I’m sorry but I don’t agree, I don’t think you are good. See you were heading out of the city. You have no idea what it’s like out there. I can help prepare you, I can offer you protection.”
M3Dussa smiled, “Tell me about the protection.”
“Now we’re talking. See I belong to the Band of the Black Hand. We have hunters who have cleared most of the Tokeners, these hunters now actively monitor for any new Tokeners so if you sign up you can level up with no risk of Tokening. Basically, if they are within our area of control and over level two, they either are a member, or they pay for protection. There are no principles level two or higher not connected with the Black Hand, anywhere nearby. It’s 7 gold a month or 60 gold annually, a great deal in my opinion. Look you get this brooch to wear.” Here he pointed to his chest, or to a small pin on it. “See you wear it and any principle who sees it will know you’re under the protection of the Black Hand.”
“What happens if I say no?”
$1lvert0ngdF0x shrugged, “nothing. Till you level up, then it’s open season, and generally, everyone who is level two and above will come at you.”
“But you said all the level two or above principles around here are affiliated with the Black Hand, right?”
$1lvert0ngdF0x shrugged again, and said, “it’s dangerous world, anything can happen.”
M3Dussa thought about it, the fox’s word had a strong pull. In fact, while M3Dussa waited his left hand started to work its way into his wallet. He grabbed his left wrist with his right hand and said, “I don’t like extortion, I decline your offer.” While it had looked like he was holding his left wrist to control it, actually it was one of the places he had his knives stashed. So when M3Dussa's right hand came away from his left wrist it was holding a knife.
$1lvert0ngdF0x started back and began to call out, M3Dussa, who was anticipating this moved quickly, wrapping his left hand around $1lvert0ngd4F0x’s snout preventing him from raising the alarm. Then holding the Foxes head out an arm's length he activated his special skill, Stone Stare. Being such a low level it barely stunned $1lvert0ngd4Fox, merely holding him still, and stiff, for a moment. M3Dussa watched a rain of sand and gravel falling as the effects of the spell wore off. He was prepared for this, intently watching for the stone to fall away from the space under $1lvert0ngdF0x’s chin. Once it was clear, revealing silver fur, M3Dussa slid his blade in. 1 kill +1 xp. >Lvl +1 xp.

M3Dussa laid the body down behind the last building. Before leaving, he looked around, making sure he was unobserved, once he was fairly sure he was he slithered quickly down the path to the south with a grin on his face. By shedding blood his mission to get his revenge had started.

P2: Chapter Twenty

Ragnar

“Waiiit! Please wait!” A surprised Ragnar spun, looking behind him where the voice came from. No one was there. The voice had started as he was leaving Sorka, and for the last hour, it had been begging for him to wait. Now he did and saw nothing. He would have turned and continue on his way, but he knew the voice would continue to dog him, he wanted to be done with it so he waited.
Around Ragnar the grass of the plane moved in the gentle breeze, it was incredibly peaceful, too peaceful. Ragnar was quickly getting bored, he tried pacing for a few minutes but very quickly ran out of patience. He stopped pacing and looked back the way he had come, the direction of the mystery pleading voice. Still, the road and the open plain around it remained empty of any principles besides himself. “I’m waiting, How long do you want me to wait?” He said out loud feeling foolish..
“I’m coming! I’m sorry, please wait!”
Ragnar still couldn’t see anyone. Then he saw movement, the grass standing thigh high moved and something very thin and tall enough to remain above the grass was moving, weaving, towards him. He hadn't seen it at first because of how thin whatever it was His stance in the middle of the road was relaxed until he realized that he was watching a sword.
Ragnar was a little concerned that he was more curious about the sword than threatened by it. Thinking that it was better to be safe than sorry he did shift to a slightly more defensive position, slightly bending his knees and putting one hand on the haft of his axe. A moment later the grass parted and the sword moved on to the road. Compared to the sword the principle was comically small, Ragnar almost missed the principle holding it. He focused on the principle.
NapolANT
Level 1
Wallet-1AU
Seeing the low-level Ragnar relaxed a little, he didn’t take his hand off his axe. Seeing that NapolANT was a level one, Ragnar relaxed further, though he kept his hold of his axe. The sword was now bobbing up and down, perhaps indicating that NapolANT was out of breath. Ragnar examined the other principle while waiting for it to speak up.
It was an ant, maybe a foot tall, maybe. The carapace was brown and shiny, the thorax, as well as the four limbs that correspond to the four human limbs, were exaggerated and oversized. Everything was as exaggerated or oversized about that sword. Based on how NapolANT carried it, it could have been light as a feather, if it weighed as much as it looked like it should, it would be many, many times NapolANT’s own weight.
The swords movement slowed, possibly indicating that NapolANT was catching its breath. “Ragnar! I almost can’t believe it’s actually you! I have been looking for you for so long.” Ragnar took note of the last statement, his body responding with a spike of adrenaline. NapolANT seemed to read Ragnar’s response and quickly, in what was an amazing show of gymnastic ability, thrust his sword point first into the ground. “Oh no! Please don’t get the wrong impression. See, I’m a reporter, I want to tell your story.”
“You’re a what? You want to report on me? Why and who would care?” Ragnar was skeptical.
“Ragnar, you’re a hero to thousands, maybe millions of principles. You have to know that, I mean come on, look at Sourka.”
They both looked back the way they came. All Ragnar could see of the town was the statue which towered above it. When prompted Ragnar acknowledged that it was an impressive sight. “That’s what I mean,” NapolANT said, then continued to drive his point home. “You’ve traveled a good distance, I’m not asking, I know I have followed for most of the way. In any of those travels have you seen a statue even half that size? No right? What about a quarter of the size? I have never seen one taller than a foot. You might not want it or even like, but you are known. Not just in Sourka either, the name Ragnar is known and rings out, throughout the lands of AntruA. There are many who want to follow your exploits, and I want to tell them. So what do you say?”
“So what do you want from me?”
“Almost nothing. All I want is to travel with you, to be able to tell AnturA of your adventures, all I want from you is to not attack me when I follow, and maybe answer my questions. Most of the time you won’t even know I’m there”
“Okay. I don’t see why not, will you go away if I change my mind?”
“Oh yeah, of course, no problem.”
“In that case I accept. I also pledge to warn you before I kill you.”
“I can follow you? It’s okay? For real?”
“Yeah sure, come on.”
NapolANT retrieved its sword, they began walking in silence. soon the rustle thump of Ragnar’s steps was the only sounds. The quiet of AntruA settled over them. That barely lasted a few moments. “Can I ask you a few questions?” NapolANT’s voice broke the quiet.
Ragnar chuckled under his breath, he had almost been able to forget the ant was there. “Yeah, sure.”
“Great! Wonderful! My very first exclusive! Um, my question is....Um, You’re a hunter for the Band of the Golden Hand, correct?”
“Yes.”
“Uh, um, right. You are a founding member right?”
“Yes.”
“Yes, okay, could you please tell me about the beginning of the Band?”
“Oh, okay. I guess I really started when MoMony got Tokened. He found me as MoProbs, and asked me to help him hunt the Tokener who had Tokened MoMony. That was my first bounty, truthfully I think that MoMony, MoProbs or whatever already had the idea for the Band. I think that Tokening is abhorrent, this seemed as good a way to go after them as any.”
“And how has it worked out for you?”
Ragnar shrugged, “Great, I guess. I mean it has given me these great missions to hunt down these dangerous monsters, monsters who I’m motivated to eliminate.”
“But what about the fame?”
“The fame? Oh, well, that. I didn’t want it, it just sort of happened. It hasn't done anything good for me that I can really think of.” Ragnar said as he thought of BeAutyBrokEn, he blushed.
“Why do you blush?” NapolANT asked quickly.
“Oh, well, it’s kind of nothing. Actually, can I tell you something of the record?”
“Oh yes! That’s what I’m here for the 'behind the scene' take on Ragnar!”
“Good, I have been dying to tell someone.”
“Oh please let it be me, I won’t tell anyone.”
“I met a girl.”
“What!? Did you say you met a girl?”
“Yes, I met a girl and I like her, a lot.”
“You like her, well that’s sweet I guess, do you think that this could have any impact on your story?”
“If I understand by what you mean by ‘my story’ then yes, I hope so.”
“So you’ve given some thought to what that role could be?”
Ragnar blushed again. “No. Nevermind, it doesn’t matter. Forget I said anything. Anyways, we’re here.” He pointed to the door of CampOut then led the way towards it, ignoring all of NapolANT’s questions. Ragnar pulled the door open, he noted that NapolANT leaned his gigantic sword against the outside of the door before entering. Ragnar followed though he almost immediately lost the small principle in the half light of the social hall. When Ragnar saw MoProbs sitting at his table all thoughts of his new friend were forgotten, As Ragnar walked to the table he noticed that MoProbs was not alone. A shadow hovered next to the elf, as Ragnar approached the shadow resolved into the dark clad form of aSTARTe. Their heads were close together, looking very much to be deep in an intimate conversation. For a moment Ragnar felt that he was interrupting something, it was to late as the had noticed him, both turning to look at him.
MoProbs was the first to react, coming out of his seat to greet Ragnar. “My friend! You are back! I am so happy to see you. We were just talking about you.”
Ragnar watched aSTARTe pour a glass of TZ. “I hope only good things,” he muttered under his breath.
aSTARTe pushed the glass in front of a empty seat, “sit,” she said.
Feeling a little disquieted, Ragnar sat. He took a sip from the glass. MoProb walked around the table, returning to his earlier set which was across the table from Ragnar. He held a glass out for aSTARTe to fill. Once full the glass was held up. “To the return of Ragnar the Great!”
They cheered each other across the table
“Congrats on your level up, I’m going to guess that means you were successful in your hunt.” MoProbs said.
“Thanks, and yes I was. Well, actually the second one was all me, but that special bounty, you know the one that requestecd me?” Ragnar asked.
“I remember and don’t worry as long as you Tokened him, you’ll get your gold.” MoProbs said then sat back in his chair.
“Good, but I really wasn’t thinking about gold. See the bounty has been Tokened, but the thing is I didn’t do it. I was there, I mean I know it happened, it just wasn’t me, anyone who uses the statue will see that.” Ragnar said feeling a weight taken off his chest
MoProbs didn’t speak for a moment looking thoughtfully at Ragnar. “Your honesty is noted. As far as I’m concerned the bounty was completed, if you’re still feeling guilty I’d be happy to take half or even all of your bonus.”
Ragnar laughed, “No, no, that’s okay I think I’ll take it. I just needed to say something,” he shrugged.
“That’s because you have a good heart.” aSTARTe said, suddenly very close. Close enough to put a hand on his shoulder, lean over and pick up his cup, bring it to her mouth to drink. She returned the cup to the table.
MoProb spoke, “and you’re a good hunter. We all are, maybe too good. The truth of the matter is we don’t have any bounties for you.”
Ragnar felt a huge wave of relief knock an emotional weight off his chest. “That might be for the best. I was here to tell you that I am leaving the Band.”
There was a squeeze on his shoulder, he looked to see aSTARTe’s hand and arm wrapped in the black strands of her hair. “One small problem with that Ragnar. We have a very important role for you to play in the new Band, we’re calling it the Band of the Black Hand. But the Black hand requires the blood of the Golden Hand to be born. From the blood it will be born, and from the body it will emerge.” She drew the blade of one of her short swords across his throat.

P2: Chapter Nineteen

RotheRed

RotheRed sat alone in his office. The light from the lone window behind him fell on the map, unrolled across his desk. The map seemed to be the only thing illuminated in the room, in the whole world. He couldn’t pull his eyes away and looking at it, he felt he was losing the war.
The Red Army was in firm control of Orup, but that was it. Worse, as much as he hated to admit it, Gilman had completely stymied his attempts to move eastward. It was time for a fresh strategy.
Knock, knock.
Glad to have a pause before delving into a new strategy called out. “Come.”
The door opened, BrutAl5o stepped into the office. “Hello, Boss.”
“Brut? What are you doing here?”
“I have two pieces of information I must tell you. One piece I was tasked to deliver by Lieutenant FreiMarkt. The other is more personal. Which would you like first?”
“The one regarding my Army first, please.”
“With all due respect Boss, I believe they both regard your Army.”
“Okay, fine, give me the message from your lieutenant, first.”
“Yes, Boss. Gilman has fallen,” BrutAl5o held up a hand to forestall any celebration. “It wasn’t us. It was the Green Army.”
“Green Army?! What do you mean there is no Green Army!”
“I think the principles who took Gilman would disagree. But I wouldn’t go ask them, they have been very hostile to the Red Army.”
“Interesting, that is very interesting. But no matter, Will you bring a message to Lieutenant FreiMarkt when you return to your post?”
“No, I’m sorry Boss, I can’t. I won’t be returning to my post. I have to resign my commission in the Red Army. With the death here the other day. That was a TZ overdose. I’ve had it verified, that was a Total Death. I have been ordered to find out who’s behind the TZ, then to do what is necessary to stop anyone else from dying from that stuff.”
“Is there no way I can change your mind?”
“No, I’m sorry.”
“I understand, some kind of personal mission.”
“Something like that.”
“Well I hate to lose you, you’re a good soldier and an asset to the Army. Could we maybe come to an agreement, that when this mission is complete you will be welcome back into the ranks as if you never left, if.”
“If?”
“Yes, if you take my message to the lieutenant. If it arrives with the seal intact, when you return to the Red Army it will be at the rank of sergeant.”
“I accept, is the message ready?”
“It will be in just a moment.”  RotheRed quickly wrote a message, sealed it and passed it to BrutAl5o.
BrutAl5o received the note, then held his hand out to RotheRed. “Boss, I want to thank you for being so cool about this. I’ll try and finish up this other thing quickly so I can return to the righteous battle against the perfidious Blue Army.”
After shaking the offered hand RotheRed said, “See that you do, dismissed.”
The door had scarcely closed on BrutAl5o when ChefBobOne65 knocked to inform RotheRed that Otto_Korrect had returned and was waiting to report. A few minutes later the door closed behind the aristocratic looking principle. “Reporting Boss, I believe I have found what we are looking for.”
“This is fantastic news! Please share your map and then show me this location.” Otto_Korrect complied, and the fog shifted on RotheRed’s map revealing much more of the water system. RotheRed could now see that Gilman sat in a strategic position to control a delta formed by two rivers. Otto_Korrect pointed to the spot below where the two rivers joined. “I think this would be the best place for long-term control of the river. Its placement works as a control point for crossing the river east and west, it’s also a good place to control any travel in or out of the delta north or south. That would be the short term goals, long term this could expand to take Gilman and control the delta.”
“I can see that you’ve thought this through. Frankly, I’m impressed, and I agree with your assessment. Your next orders are to make it happen, how many soldiers do you think you’ll need, lieutenant?”
“Lieutenant?”
“I told you that if you were successful in your mission, you would be promoted. I need the commander of this base to be of an adequate rank.”
“Yes, thank you, Boss.”
“So how many do you think you’ll need?”
“I think five to start, but once I’m established I will want more to act as a raiding party on the far side of the river.”
“Go and pick your five from the RedRoom. On second thought, take a.  sixth. Task that soldier to be a runner. Send them to me when you are established and ready for reinforcements.”
“Sounds good, any other orders?”
“That’s enough, you are dismissed. Good luck,”
Otto_Korrect left and was shortly replaced by Drac1, who sashayed, almost a slither, into the room. She snapped a salute on approaching the desk. “Reporting in Boss.”
“How were your travels south? Give me your report.” RotheRed ordered.
“I found the journey Interesting, very interesting. First I went south, I followed the road all the way down to Sourka. That town is a madhouse, seriously there are no rules, it’s the wild west. Three factions, I  don’t think it would be right to call them clans, are constantly fighting for control  of the town.”
RotheRed held up a hand, “I’m curious, why don’t you think that these factions are clans? Do they have names?”
“Yes, they have names, Buckaroo, Vaquero, and Gaucho. I have a few reasons for not calling them clans, they might have names but no leadership, the names seemed to me to be more a way to label parts of town. There is no loyalty, principles are always changing sides. I don’t think that you could find a single principle who felt they were a soldier for solely one faction over the others. It’s truly chaos.”
“I see. Was there anything else?”
“Just something I saw there.”
“Yes?”
“There is a giant statue there. It’s the result of a victory of Ragnar, It must have a couple million likes, it towers over the town, impressive really. I hadn't heard of him, have you?”
“I think I met him, he was working at the bank. I also fought him once, I didn’t win.”
Drac1 nodded her head, “Impressive, I think?. From what I’ve heard and seen, he’s kind of a big deal. He is a bounty hunter with the Band of the Golden Hand.”
“Them, I’ve heard of.”
“Okay, so Ragnar is their leading hunter. More, when I listen to the conversations in common rooms, he is seen as leading the fight against the Tokeners, a fight which is highly popular as far as I can tell.”
“I’m for it. Anything else?”
“Not at Sourka, I watched the statue then headed back, with a stop at CampOut on my way.”
“Good, tell me about it.”
“It was originally inhabited by two groups. The Band of the Golden Hand, we have already mentioned, I arrived shortly after something happened, and the other group was leaving.”
“Leaving? What do you mean?”
“I couldn’t get a straight answer about what happened, some clash between the Band and a principle calling itself LiZzard. What I gathered was that LiZzard was part of the naming group of CampOut, a few principles who didn’t want to be caught up in the clan mentality. When I arrived those who remained of that original group had joined the Band. whether they were coerced to join I couldn’t say.”
“Did you get any sense of leaders of the Band?”
“I couldn’t find out anything about their leadership. I did speak with MoProbs who takes all the bounties and assigns the hunters. I guess you could call him the leader, he acted more like an office manager. Nice enough guy. He was fully focused on business so I sure you could approach him, but if you want anything I think he will want to get paid.”
“You met this MoProbs?”
“Yes, Boss.”
“Do you think you could gain audience again?”
“Probably, they're not very formal.”
“Good. Please go get a drink from ChefBobOne65, and send him in here.”
“Yes, Boss.”
The door closed, RotheRed stretched his back then stood up. He walked to the wall with his weapon rack, Three swords, in their scabbards hung on the top of the rack, two shields hung from the bottom. He chooses a sword with +1 Damage and +1 speed. The scabbard was also enticing with +2 Appeal. The shield he chooses one with +2 Defence and +1 strength.
He was still adjusting the weight of his equipment when there was a knock on the door. RotheRed decided his equipment was in the best possible formation and stopped fussing with it. “Enter!” he called out. ChefBobOne65 closed the door once he was inside the office, “you asked for me, Boss?”
“Yes, come in.  I’m going on a brief mission, will you have any problems running this place while I’m gone?”
“No problem Boss, I’ll keep it running smooth. What do you want me to say when people ask to see you?”
“Tell them I’m busy, and to wait. I don’t think I’ll be long.”
“Very good Boss, anything else?”
“No, thank you.” ChefBobOne65 opened the door as they both left the office. Outside of the office, the noise of the social room swallowed RotheRed. ChefBobOne65 left to go back to his bar. RotheRed looked around the room to try and find Drac1. The social space was about three-quarters of the way filled with all manner of principle. Almost every one had incorporated red into their outfit, advertising their allegiance with the Red Army. With a growing sense of pride he spotted Drac1, he was finding it difficult to keep the corners of his mouth down.
Drac1 was sitting at a table by herself, with her back to the room facing the wall, she was giving off a serious ‘leave me alone’ vibe.  Her head snapped around snake quick at the sound of his footfall. Her eyes went wide when she recognized him, she started to leave her seat to stand up. RotheRed waved a hand and said, “sit.” She sat. “I’ve come to offer you a new mission,” he continued. “I need you to accompany me to CampOut and set up a meeting for me with that MoProbs.”
“I can do that, I accept.” She drained her glass of TZ, placed it back on the table. “I’m ready, when would like to leave?”
“If you’re ready, let’s leave now. No time like the present and all that.” RotheRed turned on his heel and walked to the door, the drag of a chair and some light steps were an indication that Drac1 was following. His hand was on the door handle when the cry of “Boss!” turned him around.
ChefBobOne65 was hustling in his direction. “What!” RotheRed barked.
Cheeks red, either from embarrassment or exertion and wheezing a little ChefBobOne65 shuffled to a stop. “I’m sorry Boss, really I wouldn’t unless I thought it was really important. There is a principle here to see you, I think you should meet them.” He panted.
RotheRed looked around the room and saw no one who stood out. “Where are they?” he snapped.
ChefBobOne65 gulped and pointed to the office door, “your office, Boss?”
That was the wrong answer. “Is that a question? Why? Nevermind. Just walk away we will talk about this later. Drac1, you go ahead. If I don’t catch up with you before you reach CampOut, begin preparations for a meeting with MoProbs.” RotheRed had turned on his heel before hearing the obligatory, “yes, Boss.” He did wait a moment before opening his office door to hear the main door close behind Drac1.
He tore the office door open, and stomped into the room, slamming the door closed behind him. At first he thought that they had fled and the room was empty, then a shadow moved in a back corner. RotheRed took a step forward and the shadow fully left revealing a beautiful woman in tight black clothing. He waited in the doorway and focused on the mysterious principle.

aSTARTe spoke, her voice low, “There you are, I appreciate you taking the time to meet with me.”
“You are in my office.” RotheRed spluttered, “do you even know who I am?”
“I asked to speak with the leader of the Red Army and was told to wait here. You say this is your office. So I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that you’re the leader of the Red Army, am I right?”
“You are. If you know who I am, who are you and what do you want from me?”
“Oh, darling you are adorable. I’m the second hunter for the Band of the Golden Hand. You know who we are? Oh good, that will make this easier, quicker. I’m here to make you an offer.”
“An Offer?” RotheRed moved around his desk, to buy a moment to think, took a seat then motioned for aSTARTe to take a seat across from him. He filled his glass with TZ from the pitcher that was on the desk.Once she was seated he asked, “You got an offer,  let’s hear it..”
“My partner and I would like to change how the Band operates, to do that we need your help.”
“What do you mean change how it operates?”
“We believe that our current business model is too passive, our plan is to transition to a more active pay model, something more like a subscription service.”
“Passive? Active? Subscription? What are you talking about?”
“Its simple really. As it is right now, principles only take out a bounty after another principle has been Tokened: passive, we have to wait for a Tokening, and for a principle to come to us. That’s a lot that is out of our control, the active model will fix all that. Principles will pay a monthly subscription or I don’t know what we’ll call it, anyways they will pay us and we guarantee that they won't get Tokened.”
“If they don’t pay, then they will get Tokened?”
“That’s it exactly!”
“That’s extortion.”
aSTARTe’s whole attitude changed, no longer light and friendly, “Fine, what if it is? You have an army and you’re letting it go to waste. Work with us and we can make real money.”
“Money!? Why would I want to make money like that? That a terrible idea, I would never, or anyone in my army, agree to have any part of your ugly idea. Chef Bob! Chef Bob get in here!”
aSTARTe remained in her seat, seemingly unmoved by the outburst. The door open and closed, still she sat unmoved, staring at RotheRed. “Get this Tbag out of here,” RotheRed said.
“I’m really disappointed that you won’t help. I’m also sorry to have to tell you that you’re wrong.” aSTARTe said.
“Wrong? I didn’t say anything?” RotheRed asked.
“Before when you said no one from your army would help when you said that, you were wrong.” She said it so matter factly.
Realization struck RotheRed. “You?! ChefBob?”
“Don’t go Shakespeare on me.” aSTARTe’s laughter filled his ears and ChefBobOne65’s bulk filled his vision.

P2: Chapter Eghteen

KnightShade

The quiet and stillness of the morning called to KnightShade. The only sound in the cave was the ringing splash of water falling from a height into the pool. Trying to move quietly, DreamCatCher86 was meditating not far away, he made his way to the mouth of the cave and peeked around the waterfall, the clearing and pool appeared peaceful, empty of any other principles. With his back to the rock, and taking pains to remain dry, he made his way around the wall of falling water out to the sun-dappled clearing.
Once outside he stretched and breathed deeply of the cool, fresh air. Being early in the morning the sun had yet to reach the floor of the forest. The mist from the night before had retreated to the depressions in the ground, with wisps of mist floating around the roots the forest maintained a spooky feeling despite the bright sun.
A little later while KnightShade was stretching, both the sun and DreamCatCher86 entered the clearing. Her smile warmed him almost more than the sun. Moving away from the waterfall, close to KnightShade, into the sun. She started stretching, and for a time they stretched together. Later she stopped, rolled her shoulders, “You ready?” she asked.
“The question is, are you? Have you beaten me yet?”
She snarled and leap at him bringing her bow down in a vicious overhead swing. KnightShade dived forward avoiding the blow. He rolled on impact, a paw swiped DreamCatCher86’s ankle as he rolled by. KnightShade had kept his claws retracted, so the blow had no effect at all. But he knew that if this had been a real battle, this would have marked the beginning of his inevitable victory. In this battle, the fight continued.
For a while they fought, DreamCatCher on the attack, working on her melee skills. KnightShade dodged, leaped, rolled and parried. Had this been a real battle, they both knew he would have won, but this wasn’t a real battle this was practice and warm up. The truth was it would be much harder to win now than when they started KnightShade had to admit.
Movement in the clearing distracted him and he missed a block, as a result, he caught a painful, preventable blow to the chest that sent him sprawling. Remembering that he had seen movement, he regained his feet as quickly as he could. Sultry laughter rolled through the clearing. That his sanctum had been violated filled KnightShade with rage, he was annoyed.
He focused on the offending principle.

“Well, aren't you two cute, practicing in this idyllic little clearing.” aSTARTe’s voice was low and sultry, a hint of a laugh hiding behind her words. The clatter and slide of an arrow being pulled from a quiver as well as the sound of a bowstring being drawn told KnightShade that DreamCatCher86 was not entertained by the condescending tone aSTARTe had taken. aSTARTe didn’t miss it either as she quickly held her arms out to show she held no weapons, “Oh no! I’m not here to fight, I’m so sorry if I gave the wrong impression if I startled or offended you in any way.”
KnightShade was having a hard time looking at aSTARTe, she was easy on the eyes, but her black skin tight outfit was made of a material that seemed to move, writhing constantly, over her body, he couldn’t look at it without feeling queasy. If this was a problem for DreamCatCher86 she kept it out of her voice. “Why would a bounty hunter of Tokener be here, and not want to fight?” Her voice practically dripped with derision and doubt, “Speak quick,” she continued in a cold voice, “Give me a reason not to put this arrow through your eye.”
aSTARTe’s hands went up higher, “No, no, no, no. Really, I’m not here to fight, I’m here to make you an offer.”
KnightShade held a paw out towards DreamCatCher86, “We’re listening.”
“Speak quick.” DreamCatCher86 snapped.
“I will,” aSTARTe said, “I take it you know what I do and who I’m affiliated with. Good, the Golden Hand was great when we started it. The problem is we were too good, too effective. While we got a bunch of bounties to start, we were quick to complete them. Maybe it was because we were so effective, or maybe it was something else, I don’t know, whatever the reason the amount of Toking seemed to  plummet. A few weeks ago we stopped getting new bounties completely. Because of this, we have had to rethink our business model.”
“I’m not hearing an offer,” KnightShade said.
“Wait,” DreamCatCher86 interrupted, “what do you mean change business plan? Are you going to stop bounty hunting?”
“Yes,” aSTARTe said, “there is just no money in it. We were thinking of a more active pay model. A leading idea is a monthly pass, we will guarantee if a principle pays they won't get Tokened.”
“That’s extortion!” DreamCatCher86 burst out.
aSTARTe shrugged, “maybe, I don’t think of it that way. I call it safety.”
“Safety for pay is extortion!” DreamCatCher86 said like she was talking to a small child.
“Whatever,” aSTARTe sounded as if she had lost interest in the topic. “I’m here to give you the opportunity to get in on the ground floor.”
KnightShade and DreamCatCher86 spoke at the same time. “Why us?” he asked, “what if they don’t pay?” she wanted to know.
“Whoa, whoa, one at a time, I heard a question of if they don’t pay, right?” aSTARTe held her hand before her body as if in defense against the questions. “If they don’t pay, they are on their own, if they go above level two…” She shrugged. “As for your question of why you.” she continued looking at KnightShade, “it’s simple, you’re Tokeners who are not affiliated with the Band. In our new venture, there will be a few key roles that could be perfect for you.”
“Can we have some time to talk this through before we give you our answer?” KnightShade asked.
“What is there to talk about?!” DreamCatCher86 asked incredulously.
KnightShade held one paw out to her, silently asking her to wait, to be calm.
aSTARTe spoke up, “do all the talking you need. I fact we have maybe two weeks worth of things to do before we will be ready to roll out this new business model, I’ll come when everything else is ready to go. Will that work?”
“Sure, that’s great, thanks,” KnightShade answered, without breaking eye contact with DreamCatCher86. Neither reacted,  or  spoke  when  aSTARTe  slipped from the clearing. Finally, DreamCatCher86 broke the silence, “you can’t seriously be thinking about accepting that offer?”
“I’m not. I just didn’t want to tell her no and risk a confrontation.”
“Why, together we could have taken her no problem.”
“I agree, but then what? I mean when we won we would have Tokened her, right?”
DreamCatCher86 shrugged, “Yeah, probably.”
“No probably about it. I can’t think of a situation where I wouldn’t have done it. I would have Tokened her, and then she would come down on us with the full strength of the Golden Band, or whatever it’s called. But if we wait, when they roll out this new business plan they will have their hands full. We will probably never see her again.”
